New policy brief on female migrant workers in Bangladesh

Dhaka, Bangladesh: Within the framework of our Promoting Safe Migration for the Women of Bangladesh project, we have produced a new study:“Policy Brief Based on the Desk Study Comparative scenario of female migrant workers in South Asia regions – Bangladesh.”

Bangladesh is a major source of migrant labour in the Asia-Pacific region, with employment abroad representing the second largest source of income for the country with remittances amounting to over USD 12 billion in 2016.

While international labour migration from Bangladesh has primarily been a male-dominated sector, this situation is changing. Sadly female migrant workers are often overworked, unpaid, and become victim of many forms abuse and violence while abroad. This reality is made worse by the lack of worker protection and the vulnerability of Bangladeshi female migrant workers. This Policy Brief highlights that urgent attention is needed on the formulation of more gender-sensitive policies and the implementation of existing laws to protect and empower female migrant workers.
