Baghdad, Iraq: On 7th and 8th June ICMPD has organised a National Workshop on “Mapping of statistical data collection and sharing on human trafficking, migrant smuggling and irregular migration in Iraq” in Baghdad. The event brought together over twenty representatives of various Directorates of the Interior Ministry of Iraq, including the Border Guard Command, Anti-Trafficking, Residency, Arab and International Cooperation, Training as well as Planning Directorates.
The workshop kicked-off the development process of national inter-agency guidelines in improving data exchange on irregular migration, human trafficking and migrant smuggling. The intensive two-day programme focused on mapping the existing mechanisms for data collection and data sharing on trafficking in human beings and smuggling of migrants among relevant law enforcement authorities. The workshop also allowed agencies to share the lessons learned and good practices, as well as reveal some challenges and opportunities for future cooperation.
The event was organised in the framework of the RELEC initiative of the EU-funded project “Improving Migration Management in the Silk Routes countries”. The objective of the RELEC initiative is to support the TIP Technical Committee in improving statistical and data exchange on irregular migration, human trafficking and migrant smuggling within relevant law enforcement entities as well as to support international data exchange and cooperation in this field.
