Dhaka: Three days of training for media personnel working at the national and local levels on migration are ongoing. The second online training is jointly organized by the Ministry of Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment and the International Centre for Migration Policy Development (ICMPD). Dr. Ahmed Munirus Saleheen, the Honourable Secretary in charge of the Ministry, inaugurated the training.
The training, funded by the German Federal Foreign Office, aims to strengthen the capacity of national and local media for expanded, accurate and timely reporting on migration and related topics. In addition, the training was organized to help the media to increase awareness about various government initiatives and programmes on migration which will help promote safe, orderly and regular migration.
In his remarks, the Honorable Secretary highlighted the importance and need for this training and thanked ICMPD for the timely event. He presented the various regulations and services being implemented by the government of Bangladesh to benefit migrants and their families. He also urged the journalists to “raise mass awareness and make the concerned actors aware of their individual rights and responsibilities” because “ensuring safe and decent migration is a collective responsibility”.
Representatives of various dailies, television channels and online media in Dhaka, Jessore, Joypurhat, Khulna, Nilphamari, Thakurgaon, Barisal, Jamalpur, Narail, Mymensingh, Gazipur, Sherpur, Bagerhat, Madaripur, Rajbari, Magura, Chandpur and Rajshahi participated in the training. Last August, MEWOE and ICMPD organized the first training for the media, where 25 individuals participated.
The media training is part of several awareness-raising and community education initiatives being conducted by the Migrant Resource Centres in Bangladesh, which are also supported by the European Union and Switzerland.
