Dushanbe, Tajikistan: Our Migrant Resource Centres (MRCs), run in close collaboration with partner countries in the Silk Routes region, help people to make informed decisions when considering whether to migrate. MRCs therefore play an important role in providing outgoing, intending and potential migrants with information on a broad range of migration-related challenges and opportunities. This initiative is implemented under the EU-funded project “Improving migration management in the Silk Routes countries”.
With this objective in mind in Tajikistan, an inauguration ceremony has just been held in Dushanbe for a new online pre-departure platform. This contains modules which will help citizens of Tajikistan thinking about migrating. The event was attended by the Deputy minister of Labour, Migration and Employment of Population, and included representatives from the European Union, German Corporation for International Cooperation (GIZ), the joint EU-ICMPD Migration EU eXpertise Initiative (MIEUX+), and other staff and partners from various structures of the ministry.
This ceremony was followed by a presentation on the need to hold an ongoing information campaign at Dushanbe airport. To meet this aim, the MRC in Tajikistan purchased and handed over to the Ministry two large screens which will be installed at the airport. These will regularly broadcast important, relevant and reliable information to facilitate the safe and orderly migration of Tajikistani citizens before their departure. This information will take the form of announcements, video instructions and illustrations to facilitate the easy understanding of people of different ages, genders and backgrounds.
In addition to the screens, the MRC also handed over a laptop to accelerate and improve the work of the Centre in consulting labour migrants and preparing them for departure. This was complemented stocks of information materials: including 60,000 migration cards and 25,000 copies of 10 thematic brochures on migration. The information materials and above equipment were purchased with financial support of the European Union, as the donor of the project.
The official hand-over ceremony was performed by Ms. Shahnoza Nodiri, Deputy Minister of Labour, Migration and Employment of Population of the Republic of Tajikistan and Mr. Radim Zak, Head of Region Eastern Europe and Central Asia at ICMPD.
